Meet the team: Joe

Nothing we do would be possible without our very wonderful team. They really are the heart and soul of spacelab_. To help you get to know them better, we’ve asked a few questions to give you a glimpse into who they are.
Meet Joe. Passionate about sustainability and innovation, he is a registered architect who brings over eight years of experience, creativity, and purpose to every project. As a long standing member of the spacelab_ team, Joe has been fundamental to delivering our more technical projects, from comprehensive refurbishments to new build developments. Joe’s ongoing success at spacelab_ has recently been celebrated by his promotion to Associate.
Tell us a little bit about you, your background and your role at spacelab_?
I joined spacelab around 9 years ago now as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant and haven't looked back since! Within that period of time, I have become a fully qualified Architect and feel I have grown into my role within spacelab. I hope to use my role to help steer us in a good direction moving forward, with some exciting and sustainable projects!
Outside the world of architecture, I like to keep myself busy training and competing in triathlons.
What inspires you?
The potential to have a positive and lasting impact on society, and seeing those who achieve this in all sorts of ways. There seems to be a shift in the industry towards young practices that share many of the same ideologies. Studios that have begun to highlight that, with a passion and a reason, the ‘youth’ of the industry can really make a difference, pushing forth ideals of sustainability, experimental cultures and creating spaces that will make a difference to those less fortunate.
What have been the most rewarding project moments during your time at spacelab_?
Seeing built forms come to life is always exciting, but recently the exploration of alternative project types, delving into the world of sustainability (and making that part of our day-to-day life) has all grasped my attention, as it should be in such an industry. It feels as though there is a realisation that we may not need to build as much, but rather be smarter with what we do build and how we build it, whether that be to future-proof our designs for reuse or for how we feel the climate will evolve, or to make the most impact for our clients without huge budgets.
What do you like most about working at spacelab_?
It has to be the people and our culture - the idea that a workplace doesn't have to be and probably shouldn’t be too serious. We are all wanting to enjoy life, so let's try and achieve that.
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
I’d like to see the world move away from the individualistic lifestyles that have developed in recent history, and for people to try and understand how, as a collective, we can work and live together to make our lives more fulfilling and hopefully less stressful. Allowing us time to slow down, to explore the world how we want to live.
